Reactive Social Media within South Africa

Current events bring social commentary, with Twitter being the first choice for sharing opinions for a huge portion of both South African people and brands. It goes without saying that it’s a hit-and-miss environment, and your Tweets may not be received how you expect them to be. On the other hand, if you’re quick, and sharp with your humour, your posts will be well-received.

Ask anyone interested in social media who the King of reactive social media is, and they’ll say, “Nando’s.” With a quirky (cheeky) post to accompany almost every current event on South Africa’s calendar, they do reactive, and they do it well. Sure, there are people who get offended and people who defend, but for the most part Nando’s hits the spot! 😉

#FirePool

Following the demonstrations of how effective JZ’s fire pool would be in providing water should Nkandla ever catch fire, Nando’s posted this gem. Cheeky, but oh so good. Underhandedly referring to the fire pool, but also promoting their chicken! Good on you, Nando’s.

#ConCourt

Ah, arguably one of the most important events in our recent history, the Constitutional Court discussion on JZ’s impeachment; it brought forth some fiery Tweets from Twitter’s best. Of course, Nando’s was lightning fast with this cheeky post. What better way to fix that bad taste in your mouth than some Nando’s, right, JZ?

What I love about Nando’s posts is that, while they do get political, they don’t get mean. They’re not hateful, they’re cheeky.

More recently we had #10ParliamentMinutes, poking the soft underbelly of Parliament and its inability to keep time. Find it on Twitter and enjoy.

Brand wise, my absolute favourite post from #10ParliamentMinutes is by iFix. So simple, so rad. My next choice for phone repairs? iFix.

And now for Nomu, you beautiful thing. As far as hashtags go, #ZumaMustFall was filled with a ton of negativity, and was INCREDIBLY controversial. So, what better way to jump on this trend than to replace #ZumaMustFall with #cakesmustrise? Everyone loves cake.

While Nando’s takes the cheeky angle with their commentary, Nomu took this controversial billboard and turned it into something magical; it filled the timelines of people with some Nomu love. Personally, I’d love to see more of this angle. South Africans can do with a little bit more happy, nicely packaged by Nomu.

Brands, more of this.

P.S.: Nomu, we’re not opposed to hot chocolate. 😉
